Affordable housing and support for ex-service personnel

Alabare outside the Clydach War Memorial Hospital Alabaré, a charity supporting ex-service personnel has been working with us to provide supported accommodation for homeless and vulnerable ex-servicemen and women on the site of the Clydach War Memorial Hospital in Swansea.

Members of Alabaré have recently been to see what's been going on behind the scenes where the main hospital building is being sympathetically converted into a mixture of ten 3 and 2 bed houses and bungalows to meet demand for affordable homes in the area. The development will also include 4 flats providing specialist accommodation with support from Alabaré as part of their Wales Homes for Veterans initiative which aims to provide accommodation for homeless and vulnerable ex-servicemen and women.

The site is home to the local community’s War Memorial which will remain at the front of the building to honour those who died in both World Wars. It represents the historical and emotional connection local residents have with the former hospital which was originally paid for by the community through public subscriptions to support WWI war veterans. The remainder of the building will be demolished to make way for new houses.

Jonathan Hughes, Director of Development and New Business said that Hale Construction would ensure that the development gives full recognition to the historical connections of the site as well as sensitively restoring the War Memorial and ensuring access to it is maintained for the community. He said: “Our valuable partnership with Alabaré both safeguards the Memorial and acts as a living tribute to the men and women who’ve given so much in service to their country.”

Rachel McCartney, Team Leader of Alabaré’s Wales Homes for Veterans, said “It was brilliant to see first hand the new accommodation coming along.  The new flats will be invaluable for Veterans who are making their way back to independence, having spent time living with us.  Residents will be able to benefit from living in a fantastic community which hold Veterans close to its heart.  Living in such historic and poignant surroundings will mean so much to each of them”.
