General needs housing wins Building Excellence Award

Presentation Ty Llew Tŷ Llew, our development of 13 general needs apartments has won Swansea Council's Building Excellence Award for Best Social or Affordable Housing in the south Wales region.

Designed to the Lifetime Homes standard, the development is built on the site of the former St. Mark’s Church in Waun Wen, Swansea. The scheme involved the demolition of the existing church and the construction of thirteen flats and an underground car park.

The scheme complements the City and County of Swansea’s strategic priority for the delivery of affordable housing and forms part of the Social Housing Grant programme agreed between the Welsh Government and local authorities across Wales.

Reclaimed stone from the original church walls was used during the build and two of the feature windows were fitted with stained glass reclaimed from the Alter window.

The development achieved Level 3 of the Code for Sustainable Homes and gained an additional six credits under the Ene 1 category.  A comprehensive site waste management plan was developed to re-use materials where possible and effectively minimise waste throughout the project.
